Grounding exercise for phobias and fear responses

Grounding is a simple way to come back to the present moment when the mind is pulled into fear predictions or escape planning.

Safe use note: This page provides educational and wellbeing support only. It is not a crisis service, emergency service, diagnosis, cure, treatment, exposure therapy, or replacement for medical, psychological or professional care. If symptoms are severe, worsening, or safety is at risk, contact local emergency services or a qualified health professional.

A gentle practice

  1. Name five things you can see around you.
  2. Name four things you can feel, such as your feet, hands, chair or clothing.
  3. Name three sounds you can hear.
  4. Name two things you can smell or notice in the air.
  5. Name one steady phrase, such as: “I can take one small step slowly.”

Grounding does not cure a phobia. It may help you feel more oriented while you decide what support or next step is appropriate.

Who this may suit

People looking for practical, educational support with fear responses, worry, nervousness, stress, avoidance or inner restlessness.

How to use it

Practise when stress is mild first. Skills usually become more useful when repeated gently, rather than used only at the peak of fear.

When to seek help

If fear, panic, avoidance or distress is affecting daily life, speak with a qualified GP, psychologist, counsellor or mental health professional.
